Over a period of a week or two, we’re posting 10 Q&A to some common topics in the health and fitness area. You may already know some, and you may find surprising answers to some.

Question: When you wake up, the best way to boost the metabolism is
a. eat a big breakfast
b. eat a bowl of habanero peppers
c. stick a finger in a light socket
d. get up out of bed and move around
Answer: All of the above can increase metabolism, but the best way to increase metabolism is to get up and move around.
Eating a big breakfast is thought to boost metabolism because digestion costs roughly 10% of the calories ingested. But it makes little sense to eat 500 calories just to burn 50.
Moving is still the best way to boost metabolism: go for a walk, do some jumping jacks, drop down for some burpees, or just generally get out of bed.
Turns out, then, that you can boost metabolism any time of day — just get moving. The answer is “d,” get up and move around.
Keep things in perspective, keep things simple.
